Developing holy and mature Catholic boys and men is the task which the Baraga Youth Fraternity seeks to accomplish. In the spirit of Bishop Frederic Baraga, ‘The Snowshoe Priest,’ our saintly first bishop, we desire a life of adventure coupled with virtue. We take to the outdoors in prayerful expeditions, with Christ and the Church lighting the way for the formation of men and boys in faith, love, respect, and obedience.
The Baraga Youth Fraternity meets one Sunday a month from 2:00pm - 7:00pm, beginning and ending at St. Joseph Parish.
Each month includes an outdoor adventure and learning some manly survival skills, with prayer and formational challenges to advance in rank each year. Dinner is provided. Dads, grandpas, and uncles are encouraged to participate with their boys!
At our first gathering on September 15th, we built a fire pit on the grounds of St. Joseph Parish, learned some firemanship skills and the various uses of fire for survival, hiked the cliffs around Baby Lake, prayed together in the Church, ate dinner, and ended with a fire in the newly-minted pit.
The next gathering will be Sunday, October 13th. We hope to learn orienteering skills and practice with a map of Al-Quaal Park, and to pray the Rosary through the Ishpeming cemetery for those buried there. For more information, contact Fr. Ryan.
