There have been many reports about people learning new skills and putting old skills to good use during this time. Cheryl Sarvello, parishioner at St. John the Evangelist parish, has been sewing like crazy since mid-March, providing masks to Ishpeming residents.
Beginning April 27th, anyone who enters an enclosed public space, like the grocery store or post office, has to wear a mask covering their mouth and nose. "Everyone was making masks for medical workers, and I made some, but I also realized people around here need them, too. So I started sewing for neighbors and family and friends," said Cheryl.
So far Cheryl has made hundreds of masks, which consist of pieces of fabric with a sewn-in nose piece, and elastic bands that hold the mask in place around the ears. "I ran out of elastic and it was hard to find more. I even wore out my old sewing machine and had to buy another one!" Cheryl said.
This is one way that neighbors are chipping in to help each other out during this time. Thanks to each person who's using their skills to support the members of this community!
